New Zealand

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) released its UFO files in December 2010 following a sustained Official Information Act (OIA) request by researcher Bryan Dickeson. The release covers correspondence, sighting reports, and the famous Kaikoura Lights event of 1978–79 — the only case in NZ history where the Royal New Zealand Air Force scrambled aircraft and recorded UAP on military film.

Kaikoura Lights — December 1978

On 21 December 1978, a Safe Air Argosy freighter flying Wellington → Christchurch reported multiple unidentified lights. The next night a TV news crew on a second Argosy recorded approximately 23 seconds of 16 mm motion film showing bright objects manoeuvring at apparent high speed. Wellington ATC simultaneously logged unknown radar returns. The NZDF + RNZAF formally investigated; the case remains officially open.

NZDF file release (2010)

Following the 2010 OIA release, the NZDF UFO files comprise roughly 2,000 pages from 1952 onward, including police-forwarded civilian reports, RNZAF intercept logs, and government correspondence with foreign air forces (USAF, RAAF). The complete release is published at nzdf.mil.nz and mirrored in part by the National Library of New Zealand.

Verbatim — NZDF statement on the release, 2010

"The New Zealand Defence Force has released its files on reported sightings of unidentified flying objects… in keeping with the spirit of the Official Information Act, where there is no compelling reason to withhold the material."
