NARA National Archives & Records Administration

NARA holds the U.S. federal government's permanent record. Of its ~13 billion textual pages, 43 million photographs, and 12 million maps, the UAP-relevant subset is dominated by Project Blue Book (1952–1969) at Record Group 341 — 12,618 reported sightings, 700 unexplained — released to the public on microfilm beginning July 1976 and digitised through the early 2000s.

Mission

NARA's statutory mission under 44 U.S.C. § 2102 is to "preserve and make available to the people of the United States the permanent records of their government". UAP records are not a special category — they are accessioned, declassified, and described under the same standards as any other federal records series.

Key UAP record groups

RG 341 — Records of HQ U.S. Air Force, including Project Blue Book master files (microfilm T1206, T1207).
RG 263 — CIA records, including the 1953 Robertson Panel report.
RG 305 — Office of Special Investigations, AFOSI UFO sighting reports.
RG 374 — Defense Special Projects, partial UAP correspondence.
JFK Records Collection — per the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992, tangential UAP correspondence accessioned by NARA in subsequent declassification tranches.

Verbatim — Project Blue Book closure statement

"As a result of these investigations and studies, and experience gained from investigating UFO reports since 1948, the conclusions of Project BLUE BOOK are: (1) no UFO reported, investigated and evaluated by the Air Force has ever given any indication of threat to our national security; (2) there has been no evidence submitted to or discovered by the Air Force that sightings categorized as 'unidentified' represent technological developments or principles beyond the range of present-day scientific knowledge; and (3) there has been no evidence indicating that sightings categorized as 'unidentified' are extraterrestrial vehicles."

— Memorandum, Secretary of the Air Force, 17 December 1969
