July 2008. The Defense Intelligence Agency scopes AAWSAP: foreign aerospace threats "through the year 2050". The study list: lift, propulsion, control... and item 5, "spatial/temporal translation".

Sept 2008. The contract goes to Bigelow Aerospace Advanced Space Studies, Las Vegas. Box 26, total award amount: $21,948,810.00. That's in the contract file the Pentagon just released.

Out came 37 papers. "Warp Drive, Dark Energy, and the Manipulation of Extra Dimensions". "Traversable Wormholes, Stargates, and Negative Energy". "Antigravity for Aerospace Applications". "Invisibility Cloaking".

The warp paper did the math. At 100x light speed: Mars in 193 seconds, Jupiter 36 min, Alpha Centauri 15 days, the Orion Nebula 1.3 years. It cites Star Trek by name, and calls the energy needed "phenomenally high".

The dark one: injuries from "advanced energy systems". Its 42 + 300 cases are mostly known microwave exposures. And the Pentagon's own label for all 37: "reference and synthesis products rather than... original research".

Table 1, transit times at 100x the speed of light (p.6): Mars 193 seconds, Jupiter 36 minutes, Neptune 4 hours, Alpha Centauri 15 days, Epsilon Eridani 38 days, the Orion Nebula 1.3 years. The dark one: injuries blamed on "advanced energy systems"

"An extensive review of the medical literature ... has revealed an additional relevant but less dramatic 42 cases from the peer-reviewed medical literature, and an additional un-published similar 300 cases, primarily when fields were measured or emitters were known" (1-10 GHz) (p.5). Yet: "The medical analyses ... do indicate the use of (to us) unconventional and advanced energy systems." (p.7)
