The theory: UFOs keep showing up where the nukes are ☢️
1947: Roswell, home of the world's only atomic bomb unit.
1949: green fireballs over the A-bomb labs, and a SECRET meeting with Edward Teller.
The files 🧵 DOE-UAP-D004
It's not just internet lore. A 1949 Air Intelligence report lists sightings "near Oak Ridge, Tenn., Las Cruces, N. M., and ... the Hanford Works" (p.10): the uranium, rocket and plutonium sites. Its worry back then? Soviet spy craft.
Blue Book chief Edward Ruppelt, 1952: "Around Los Alamos and the Albuquerque area, there's concentrations. Around White Sands, there's concentrations." (p.3)
From Dec 1948, bright green fireballs over Los Alamos and Sandia. The top meteor expert, Lincoln LaPaz, saw one himself: "not, in my opinion, a conventional meteor fall" (p.4).
Feb 16, 1949, room P-162, Los Alamos: lab director Bradbury, Edward Teller, future Nobel winner Reines, an FBI man. The subject "was classified Secret" (p.2). And the transcript mentions Roswell: five men watched a green fireball go by (p.7).
LaPaz's case: green like "copper salts in the Bunsen burner" (p.9), nearly flat paths, "visible at distances of the order of 400 miles" yet silent (p.5). Teller: "it ought to be a material body - might be an electron phenomenon" (p.25).
Plot twists: the famous copper-in-the-air sample? "No widespread significant dispersion"; the one heavy sample "presumed to be of local origin" (D017 p.4). By 1950 LaPaz thought half were meteors, the rest US guided missiles (FBI file p.4).
The skeptic's answer: the most watched skies get the most reports, and bright meteors often glow green. Believers point to Malmstrom 1967 and drone swarms over nuclear plants. Watching our nukes, or watching too hard? You decide.

1949: sightings near Oak Ridge, Las Cruces and Hanford (the A-bomb sites)
Air Intelligence report, 1949 (p.10): "sightings of flying objects have been made near Oak Ridge, Tenn., Las Cruces, N. M., and in the general area of the Hanford Works in Oregon" (Hanford is actually in Washington). Its concern was Soviet reconnaissance: these establishments "were not, and are not, accessible to Soviet collectors of photographic intelligence".

Ruppelt, 1952: "Around Los Alamos and the Albuquerque area, there's concentrations"
Project Blue Book chief Capt. Edward J. Ruppelt (p.3): "Around Los Alamos and the Albuquerque area, there's concentrations. Around White Sands, there's concentrations." He also lists the big ports, and says the Dayton cluster was partly because "the people in that area knew that all the activity in this project was taking place in that area" (p.3): more watchers, more reports.

The secret meeting, 16 Feb 1949, room P-162: Teller, Bradbury, Reines, LaPaz, the FBI
Opening: the subject of Aerial Phenomena "was classified Secret within the meaning of AR 380-5" (p.2). LaPaz on Dec 12, 1948: "not, in my opinion, a conventional meteor fall" (p.4); colour "very close to 5218 which is about the color you get when you have copper salts in the Bunsen burner" (p.9); "although it produces light visible at distances of the order of 400 miles, it doesn't make a sound" (p.5). Teller: "it ought to be a material body - might be an electron phenomenon." LaPaz: "Nothing like this, to my knowledge, has ever been observed in the case of meteorite drops." (p.25) On Roswell: "In the case of the Roswell observation ... We have a group of five men - there were near a steel smokestack - and every last one of them swears that they heard at the same time they were watching the green fireball go by, a noise like, say, a gasoline blowtorch" (p.7).

The copper test: "no widespread significant dispersion"
116 pages from the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project and the Air Force on 209 sightings of green orbs, discs and fireballs near Sandia Base, 1948-1950. The air-sampling report (p.4): "My tentative conclusion is that no widespread significant dispersion of copper-bearing particles was present in the atmosphere"; the one heavy copper collection "should be presumed to be of local origin"; "The passage of two automobiles while this collection was being made is a complicating factor."
